Thanks for you observations and questions. I agree that it may not be fair to compare to the 30D but actually at a much lower price point, the K10D does in fact have much if not more to offer in certain regards. The build quality is excellent, the ergonomics great. The SR really helps (particularily me since I have a bit of a tremor in my hands). I did notice the noise on groups on my monitor and on 8x10 pictures. It was not horrible by any means and many people, especially those with film background would probably find it nice...the noise is smooth and random.
I have no doubt that this camera can compete with the 30D even though the target is the XTi. I just need to decide if the noise is a problem for me and my subjective view.

I had a chance to compare a K10D (which I just got from B&H) and a Nikon D80. Also I would compare K10D with K100D, Nikon D200 and other cameras I used to have. Please note that this is a very preliminary analysis based on the about 1 hour I had both K10 and D80 together in my hands. Also note, that this is my personal opinion, which may differ from anyone else…
Body:
• In general, K10D is about the same quality as Nikon D80, with some elements such as rubber inserts and control buttons as well as better quality doors and rubber seals giving the edge to K10D. However, the Nikon D200 feels more solid than either of them…
• The general K10D body balance and shape feels very close to Canon 20D. Even though the K10D is not significantly heavier than D80.
Viewfinder:
• K10D viewfinder gives exactly the same field of view as Nikon D80 and D200, noticeably larger than K100D. It has a slightly warmer color tinge.
Focusing speed:
• In a bright outdoor light, the K10D focuses significantly faster than K100D. It even focuses faster than Nikon D80 with non-AFS lens. It feels that it focuses as fast as Nikon with the AFS lens!
• In the deem indoor light, the K10D still focuses significantly faster than K100D, however indoor it is prone to “hunt” and thus Nikon with any lens focuses faster.
Picture Quality (K10D with Sigma 18-200mm and Pentax 50mm F/1.4 vs D80 with Nikon 18-200mm VR and 50mm F/1.4. I did not compare k10D vs K100d) :
• Both cameras produce great pictures!
• Interestingly enough, the Sigma 18-200mm performed great against Nikon 18-200mm – it had less purple fringing and almost the same sharpness. The only are where Sigma was noticeable worse that Nikon was distortion on the shorter focal lengths…
• The noise level seems to be the same in both cameras.
• The Nikon default setting is significantly more vivid than Pentax. Even if you set the Pentax to “Bright”, the pictures would have slightly less saturation than with Nikon in default mode.
• Pentax seems to have noticeably better dynamic range than Nikon, with lots of details in shadows.

CytatI am very happy with the camera. DNG is a great thing -- I was able to edit RAW photos without any new software. SR is VERY good, I was able to get sharp images at 1/8" using the DA70/2.4. Without SR the image was not usable. The 10MP are phenomenal -- you can crop to your heart's content. The camera lies very well in the hand. It is very well built and is very stable. Not as stable as a magnesium body, but it is less expensive and I would rather spend my money on lenses.
Cheers,
Bojidar
